St. Anton am Arlberg: cradle of alpine skiing

When the founding members established the Ski-Club Arlberg on 3 January 1901, they probably had no idea in the slightest what would follow in the coming decades. Initially slow to develop after the opening of the Arlberg railway tunnel in 1884, tourism received a tremendous boost from enthusiastic skiers.

Railway and skiers: a recipe for touristic success on the Arlberg

More and more skiers want to discover skiing pleasure on the Arlberg for themselves and soon after the founding of the Ski Club Arlberg, the first ski races were held. In 1907, the ski instructor Hannes Schneider developed the legendary "Arlberg technique", which is still familiar to us today as stem turn. In 1922, the ski school in St. Anton was founded.
